The Wizard of Paws is a reality show on BYU TV that follows Sterling, Virginia-based animal orthotist Derrick Campana as he creates prosthetic limbs for pets and sanctuary animals. Changing their lives forever. The series premiered in April 2020.
Those are the logistics but there is so much more! Some of us know the feelings that come when you can’t function as usual. There are usually people explaining everything along the way, which calms some of our biggest fears a little. Understanding your situation helps tremendously! It gives you something to work with and can give you hope.
Now imagine that you can’t understand a thing that’s going on or what will happen next. Even if someone is trying to help them, they don’t know if you are going to hurt them instead. It’s pure trust.
This is an older video. There are seven seasons now.
They surely know that they can’t function like their peers. Their worries matter. Fear can destroy hope. It takes a special spirit to adjust to everything unavoidable that comes along, even when the future is completely blank to you. It also takes a special spirit to hear those silent worries and calm them.
They know that they can’t do a lot of the things that they should be able to do. Things that would make them enjoy life. They can’t tell anyone about it either. Nobody understands them. Some of us know what that’s like. It’s so frustrating, even when you have other ways of communicating with people. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to have none.
All we can do is empathize and try to understand. That’s why I really admire Derrick.
Animal prosthetics expert Derrick Campana travels across the country to help animals with limited mobility through his organization, Bionic Pets. Derrick builds custom artificial limbs and wheelchairs for dogs, cats, camels, goats, cows, horses, ducks, elephants, etc….. so they may avoid further injury, amputation or worse.

But it’s not just the loveable critters that are changed forever- the families of the pets also find hope and healing through Derrick’s kindness and help. For a lot of us, our pets are our world and a huge source of comfort. I know mine are. He’s definitely helping more people than animals. He should be very proud of himself! I know I’m so grateful that he does what he does!

I accidentally stumbled across this show while looking for something else. I usually save shows and don’t often get to them but something made me decide to check this out right away. I’m so glad I did! I have now watched every single episode and I’m so excited to see the next season!
Definitely a must watch! The world needs more people like Derrick!
